1) Don’t assume all photographers are created equal – As is the case with any artist, photographers each have their own style and areas of expertise. When choosing a photographer, be sure to view their portfolios and select a professional whose style is in line with your vision.
2) Don’t assume your chosen photographer knows how you want to be photographed – Professional photographers should be very accessible to consult with you and help design your dream photoshoot. Ask the photographer to help you develop an inspiration board and collaborate on ideas.
3) Don’t rule out the services of professional hair and makeup for the day of your shoot. You may be fantastic at doing your own hair and makeup and that is fine, however, professionals know what looks good on camera and what to avoid. Should you choose to do your own makeup – keep it simple with an emphasis on the eyes and cheeks. Hair should be styled in a way that won't cast shadows on your face.
4) Don’t underestimate the power of good lighting – While hair, makeup, and wardrobe are all important, all photographers know that lighting is the single essential element that will make or break an image. While it’s not your job to worry about the lighting, it is important to understand that the lighting will have a bigger impact on the end result than anything else – makeup, for example. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have your hair and makeup professionally done on the day of your shoot. I highly recommend that you do!
5) Don’t wait to "lose 10 pounds” or find other reasons to delay your photoshoot! Your life is your legacy and your story deserves great pictures. Good photographers know how to style, light, and pose you to create images you never thought possible. Your photographer knows how to make you look your absolute best!
6) Don’t wait until the last minute to book your session – Many photographers book weeks, or even months in advance. For example, if you are considering a maternity session, you should contact your maternity photographer early in your pregnancy. There is a window of only a few weeks to achieve the best pregnancy images.
7) Don’t forget that the photographer will need some time after your photoshoot to cull, edit and prepare images for delivery to you. Sometimes it’s hard to wait when you are excited to receive your pictures. Be patient - The process takes time and good professional photographers take great care when preparing photos.
