You’ve made the decision to have a maternity photoshoot – what a wonderful way to capture this most special time in your life! Read on to learn how you can be best prepared to create stunning images that you will love forever.
Scheduling
Photographers have their own expertise and each offers different products and services. Visit photographers' websites and view their galleries to find the perfect professional for you. Once you decide who your photographer will be, reach out to schedule a consultation as early as possible. During your first consultation, ask about services and pricing. The photographer should be able to communicate very specific options that meet your needs. Many photographers book months in advance, so you should consider contacting them early in your second trimester. The best time to schedule your shoot is for when you are 30-36 weeks. At this stage, your baby bump will be well-defined and you should still be able to pose and stand comfortably.
Pre-planning/styling
Your chosen photographer should be very accessible to help plan and style your shoot. Make sure to communicate the types of images you would like to create. Share ideas and develop an inspiration board. I use Pinterest to do this with my clients. Do you want nude or implied nude photos? Would you prefer more modest images? What will your wardrobe be? What undergarments do you need to bring? Do you have a special dress, outfit or accessory that you want to wear? How would you like to be photographed? These are all very important topics to discuss with your photographer. As you collaborate through the process, you will gain confidence knowing that all of the preparation will result in beautiful images, exactly as you dreamed of!
Hair and Makeup
I highly recommend the services of a professional hair and makeup artist. It’s your day to shine and be pampered! Most photographers work with hair and makeup professionals and can help connect you with the perfect artist. Should you choose to do your own hair and makeup, I recommend a hair style with soft natural waves. Makeup should also be natural looking with an emphasis on the eyes, lips and cheeks. Rose or peachy toned blush on the cheekbones is lovely. An even skin tone is also very important. Strong highlighting and contouring should be avoided, as should self-tanners, bronzers and heavy eyeshadow/eyeliner. Lashes can really accentuate the eyes but be careful to not overdo it. Single lashes, applied in a minimal way look best. Finally, consider getting a mani-pedi a day or 2 before your shoot. I recommend light pink, or another soft natural color. Your hands will be visible in many of your images, so this is an important consideration.
The Day of the Shoot
There are a few last-minute things you can do to prepare to arrive at the studio the day of your shoot. Apply a non-greasy lotion to your skin, be well-hydrated, and wear loose-fitting clothes since elastic bands and tight-fitting clothes tend to leave marks on the skin. Most of all, RELAX! It's very natural to feel a little nervous and so many, actually too many women tell me that they aren't photogenic. My response is, "There's no such thing!" Your photographer knows how to light and pose you in the most flattering way. Their job is to take the best pictures you have ever seen of yourself. This is going to be the most enjoyable day as you and your photographer create beautiful images to document your magical journey. You’ve prepared well, so now is the time to soak in every minute and let the photographer do their thing! Trust the creative process and be present in the moment. Enjoy!
